The Brief & Concept

A powerful project about the exploitation of children in media. It shines a light on problematic practices in regards to children such as being sexualized, being forced into fame, participating in beauty pageants, and altering one's appearance at a young age. The choice in abstract imagery and evocative illustrations was founded in the need to approach the situation delicately rather than literally. Color and type styles were used to convey different themes throughout the zine.

The duotone color scheme with the dominant color red was due to its common association with sexuality, anger, and urgency. In the illustrations, the reds appear lighter in color to imitate childlike imagery. In the feature, deeper reds were used with mature fabrics such as velvet, silk, and lace. Heavy type was used to mimic an overbearing presence.
