REMEMBERING THOSE WE LOST
MONUMENT DESIGN | STUDENT WORK
The Brief & Concept
This project's goal is to create an Italian memorial monument for COVID-19. The purpose of this monument is for the healing of society.
The overall concept is that of family, lineage, community, and hope. The shape resembles DNA, alluding to the resilience of humanity and family. The twisting forms end in the shape of hands coming together, symbolizing the distance between people, yet reaching upwards and towards each other to show hope.
The structure is tall and sturdy, made of a polished iron alloy to represent a prominent mineral in blood. The material and reflectiveness also allude to modern Italian design, with ties to Futurism and juxtaposes the traditional architecture of the piazza.
